Devlog 5/31 (The Door Problem)
The industry roles that sound most appealing to me are Creative Director, Writer, Level Designer, and Localizer.
My interest in writing and level design are related in that I really enjoy crafting stories and worlds for games. The thing I most enjoy as a player of games is experiencing stories and discovering secrets or solving puzzles. Because of that, as a developer I find great enjoyment in crafting the player’s experience with regard to narrative and level design.
The role of Creative Director seems appealing and difficult, as they are responsible for a game’s overall concept and direction. I think the role of creative director is interesting because whether they conceive of the project initially or they guide the vision for the project after its initial conception, they seem to carry the weight of deciding what the overall game will be from the start of the development process to the end.
I’m also fascinated by the process of translation and localization of video games. This is also related to my interest in writing because I’m interested in the way a player’s experience of a game’s story may vary depending on language and context.
The programming roles seem very difficult because of the level of technical skill, problem solving, and patience required to perform them. For me, taking on the role of Publishing or PR seems a little boring because they seem a bit less directly involved in the creation of the game, but that's only because those types of roles aren’t related to my interests.
